Fatal flaws that could sink Jags, Chiefs and six others- By Chris Wesseling NFL.com

4) Kansas City Chiefs' secondary

Led by Dee Ford's impressive contract push, the front seven can hold its own once bookend edge rusher Justin Houston returns from his hamstring injury. Barring a trade for All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson, on the other hand, the back end of Bob Sutton's defense looms as a season-long liability. The Chiefs' last-place defense has allowed 435.4 yards per game, a number that has them on pace to threaten the 2012 Saints' record for futility. Can K.C. really count on Eric Berry to be a savior when the three-time All-Pro safety is dealing with a painful deformity in his surgically repaired heel?

Um, the deformity is not on his surgically repaired heel.   Nice assumption though.

The problem with this team isn't on the corners...  Safeties and inside linebackers are the problem, though they played better last week.   Giving up high picks for Peterson isn't going to fix the defense.

Don't need to fix it, although that would be wonderful. They just need to improve it.

With the exception of Jags and Cincy games none of those yards were garbage as the game ended up within a score or two as most. Defensive issues are real and concerning, just because we played well once doesn't really change much. If the Cincy game performance can be sustained it would be a whole other story but at this point this defense is in dire need of ugprades all over the place.

They were lazy after the big league in sf. They played soft and allowed a ton of late yards

True but I wouldn't call that garbage as that refers to the game actually being over. They pulled within 10 or something in 3rd which has more to do with our coaching than it actually being garbage time.

Fair enough. It had that classic feel that we played soft and let them right back in

The defense is terrible, but lets not ignore the fact we have faced Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Brady in shootouts. Basically the best QBs not named Mahomes in the AFC. Lets see how we look against Keenum, Mayfield, and Rosen the next three weeks as hopefully they make adjustments and start playing better. Just the fact we made it this far and haven’t had inexplicable losses is encouraging.

I agree, but then again those are "excuses". A good defense is a good defense. I don't blame the "lack of" performance all on Sutton, but he shoulders a lot of it. At the end of the day, these guys have to "want to" play better. Last week against cincy the LB's looked a lot less hesitant and did a lot more attacking than standing and waiting to get blocked by pulling guards and other linemen. Lucas was really good in run support also. He was playing very aggressive.

With Lucas and DOD on the field in sub packages, I believe we will see some aggressive run defense. I just hope once they get there, they make the damn tackle.

As for our secondary, IMO one thing they need to do to improve is TURN THEIR FREAKING HEADS around, and actually look/track the ball!
