Possible Safety Help

Raiders waived/injured S Obi Melifonwu.
The No. 56 overall pick of the 2017 draft, Melifonwu was limited to just five rookie appearances by knee and hip injuries. The hip issue lingered all offseason. He was sent to visit a specialist for a "lower-body injury" last week, presumably related to his hip. Melifonwu will be exposed to waivers but likely pass through unclaimed, reverting to injured reserve. If he gets healthy, it's possible he will be released with an injury settlement. Raiders waived S Obi Melifonwu.
The Raiders telegraphed this move when they waived/injured Melifonwu in August. The No. 56 overall pick of last year's draft, Melifonwu could not get healthy as a rookie and then barely practiced during the offseason. That was enough for impatient coach Jon Gruden to move on. Still only 24, Melifonwu should pretty quickly get a second chance elsewhere if his health cooperates. Oct 23 - 5:21 PM

Free agent DB Obi Melifonwu is visiting the Saints on Tuesday.
He has also met with the Cowboys and Patriots. It seems likely the second-round sophomore has a new team in the near future. Oct 30 - 9:47 AM

Surprised to see Melifownu still around. Could be a nice pick up if coached right. Blew people away in the combine.

Yup seems its 100% due to injuries why he got cut.  The flip side is that he was on IR and only got off IR if he got healthy(If I understand it correctly).  So it means he must at least can get on the field now.

I see he has visited a lot of teams so who knows what he does....Maybe some "FU Raiders for not sticking with me" kinda stuff and he signs with KC?

Speaking of Berry I’d consider there now to be a reasonable clock where he can shake rust off and help us when it matters. And that for me needs to be after the bye week in less than four weeks. If he’s still not practicing by then, seems highly unlikely he can help us.

So if we are looking at a young safety like this who’s roster spot are they looking to replace if it’s not Berry?

From most snaps to released seems like a reach but it isn’t  impossible.  Plus we need another spot for Sorenson too. Josh Shaw seems likely in there. Or maybe if Houston comes back they just release Nate Orchard.  (Houston was a limited participant today so he must be getting close).

Wondering if they also wouldn’t come up with some fantasy injury for Khalil McKenzie at some point as well.  Or even that third TE rookie we are carrying.

The only thing I can think of why Berry isn’t playing is that his bone spur, when playing, has a much higher % of tearing his Achilles the more and more he puts strain on it.  Thus if he played week 1...the odds of his Achilles giving out to the bone spur by playoffs is much greater than say him playing week 10 or so.

His bone spur doesn’t sound like it’s something that will heal.  I’ve seen picture of soccer players with this and they just cut a hole in the shoes to not allow rubbing.

Im sure he will come back for playoffs and the spur will rip his Achilles and he will not be able to play for the 2019 season errrrrr.

My cousin had a spur in his knee and they took care of it without surgery using focused ultrasound. The only thing at risk was his tendons so obviously a spur in the knee is definitely simpler than a spur in the heel and he's not an athlete but considering his recovery time I would expect Berry to go through some alternative treatments as well.

Cool this is the first time I’ve heard of other options besides going in and shaving it down.  Thanks Sith
