Alex Smith Devastating Complications from Surgery

Recommended Posts

Alex Smith’s ability to even begin any sort of rehabilitation to a spiral fracture to his leg has been delayed by “devastating complications.”

Alex Smith already faced a long, arduous road ahead after suffering a spiral fracture of his tibia and fibula earlier this season after suffering a gruesome hit against the Houston Texans. Now the Washington Redskins quarterback is facing further setbacks if reports are correct that the veteran is suffering from “devastating complications” following surgery.

Smith went down in Week 11 and was carted off the field in the third quarter against the Texans as Colt McCoy took over. It was clear that the compound fracture, which means the bone broke the skin, would end Smith’s season.

From there, rumors began to circulate that Smith might not even play another down in the NFL given the complexity and severity of the injury. Patrick Mahomes, his replacement with the Kansas City Chiefs, spoke out in support of him saying he knew he could return, but the reality of the situation is looking worse as time goes on. Check out the latest report from Eric Bickel:

Very unfortunate; Here is the link to the full story. https://arrowheadaddict.com/2018/12/06/alex-smith-injury-update-devastating-complications-redskins-chiefs/

His career is over.  He may lose his entire leg.  I didn't know until today that this was an open fracture.  Horrific. He turned the Chiefs franchise around almost instantly and is a terrific guy and the consummate professional.  This is incredibly sad.  I wish him the best and a complete recovery.

Lose his entire leg?  Probably not, but he'll likely need some reconstruction and yeah it's over.

Not a bad run for someone that once heard WE WANT CARR chants.

Hopefully not, but the risk is there.  An open fracture is where the broken bone breaks through the skin and is exposed to the outside.   Bacteria gain access to the fracture site and the inside of the bone.  He has already had multiple procedures for removal of tissue due to infection.  Some bacteria become resistant to almost everything.  At any time, these could invade the blood, and he could develop septicemia, which is life threatening.  If the disease keeps spreading in his leg, it is always a possibliity that the only way to protect his life is to do an amputation.  That is why I said he could even lose his leg.  Still very unlikely at this point, but I think the goal now would be to somehow stay ahead of the infection.

Hopefully it doesn't get to that. Being a pro athlete I'm pretty sure he's getting the best treatment available and will continue to do so.

I'm sure he is. The problem is that sometimes the "best treatment" is to simply remove the source of infection.  If too much has to be removed that the lower leg becomes permanently useless, and life threatening resistant infection develops, the "best treatment" is no longer determined by the sports medicine specialists in orthopedic surgery.  It is a choice made by the patient and the family based on the opinions of infectious disease specialists and how far the infection is spreading.  A patient's life becomes more important than a career.  A person can live a happy life with a prosthesis. Let's hope it doesn't come down to that, but the multiple surgeries to remove infected tissue is quiite simply a bad sign, no matter how good the orthopedic surgeons are.

Bil is correct.  Happened to me.  We were 1 day away from amputating my leg when they finally got control of the infection.  When the infection is deep it's nasty shit.  He'll need metal in there holding it together as is.  He might be able to return from this but I doubt it.

Alex Smith will be at least a QB coach for some team next year.  Since he knows the entire Reid playbook and served as mentor to Mahomes, it might be for the Chiefs.  A match made in heaven.  Alex still has lots of friends on the team and in KC.  Or, if Bienemy becomes a HC somewhere, he would make an ideal OC for the Chiefs and eventually move into the HC position if Reid retires or becomes incapacitated.  It would be a seamless transition.  In fact, it is so obvious, that I predict it.

Why couldn't he be the D-line coach?  He has tons of experience seeing them in the offensive backfield.
